The Human Genome, the full reading of the 25,000 or so genes found in each of our cells, holds clues to health,
illness, behavior and emotion. These clues are not always easily understood, especially in this age of
thirty-second sound-bites. Often an experienced guide is helpful to make sense of the science and clear away
the jargon. As such, education is a key mission of the Emory Department of Human Genetics and we take seriously
our responsibility to teach and facilitate an understanding of all things genetic. Our involvement occurs
across multiple levels and with varying audiences:
- Training in Genetics for Graduate Students, Nursing Students, and Medical School Students
We provide formal student training through our participation in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
and the Schools of Medicine and Nursing at Emory University.
- Local School Systems
We are active in the local school systems and are available as guest speakers for elementary, middle
or high school classes - we can offer activities and teaching sessions that meet state and national
education standards as they relate to genetics and understanding of DNA.
- Community Outreach
- We are committed to increasing genetic literacy among adults, not only in Atlanta and the surrounding
metro area, but across the Southeast. We lead "Genetics 101" sessions to introduce the concepts behind
DNA, the sequencing of the human genome and the role of genes in health and disease. This one-hour
discussion is perfect for a lunch-and-learn or evening gathering for civic or faith-based organizations,
libraries, and other adult gatherings.
- Speaker's Bureau (coming soon)
- We hold summer workshops for young women with specific metabolic disorders to promote a better
understanding of the disorder, address dietary challenges and provide a supportive environment. Click
here for more information about our annual metabolic camp.
- Got a question you don't see addressed with one of these options? Go to our "Ask the Geneticist"
website and review our list of frequently asked questions or submit your query directly.
