Duarte Galactosemia Classes
Duarte Galactosemia (D/G) Classes are offered to parents whose babies have been newly diagnosed through the Georgia Newborn Screening Program.
- What is Duarte Galactosemia? Duarte Galactosemia is a milder form of Galactosemia than Classical Galactosemia. Most infants will need treatment only for the first year or two of life. For most babies, treatment will include use of a soy formula in place of breast milk or a lactose-containing formula.
- What happens in a Duarte Galactosemia class?
- A family history and medical history of the baby are taken by a genetic counselor or dietician.
- Babies are examined by a metabolic geneticist to ensure that no signs or symptoms of Classical Galactosemia are present.
- A presentation is given to educate parents about Duarte Galactosemia, including how it is inherited.
- Parents will be informed about the “milk challenge” needed to determine when it is safe for their baby to return to a standard diet.
- In some cases, additional blood work on the baby may be needed.
- How long does the Duarte Galactosemia class last? Approximately three to four hours. Because of the length of time involved, some families find it beneficial to bring someone who can watch their baby during the educational portions of the class.
- Is there a charge? Yes. In many instances, insurance will cover the majority of the associated costs, although you should confirm this with your company prior to the appointment.
- How often are the classes offered? Duarte Galactosemia classes are usually held six times a year (every other month).
- How do I make an appointment? You can schedule an appointment by calling 404-778-8570.
